Read Before Downloading

Before downloading “free” software you should verify that it’s from a reliable source.

The worst “free” software you can get is “warez” from pirates — the easiest way for malware to get onto your computer these days is if you put it there yourself. Both Windows Vista/7 and Mac OS X are very secure against remote attackers, but if you install random stuff from known criminals on your computer you have no-one but yourself to blame.

All of the software discussed on this site is from reputable sources, and I always link direct to the source and not to third-party download sites, and I’ve downloaded and used all of this software at some point.
